Service Description: Polygons representing satellite swath imagery to be acquired throughout Canada by the Emergency Geomatics Service of Natural Resources Canada. Imagery is used to derive flood, river ice and other products for emergency response. During emergency events, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) may be activated by Canada’s emergency management protocols to provide related geomatics services. As new satellite imagery becomes available, NRCan will extract emergency products and update the corresponding dataset in near real time (4 hours). This item represents recent, current, and planned future acquisitions of such imagery, and identifies the product types to be derived from it. It portrays active acquisitions, spanning a timeframe centred on the current date and time, plus or minus 72 hours. Filter on date, Province and/or Area of Interest (AOI) to view specific items. Time-enabled on Date UTC field. ".zip" file packages that contain the shapefile, PDF map, and ".kmz" of individual products derived from this imagery are available through the FTP links listed in the Package URL field, for those recently acquired images that have had products derived and published from them. Disclaimer: Emergency response authorities are the primary users of the map products derived from this satellite imagery. Not all acquisitions will result in products being created from them, and planned acquisitions may be cancelled or unavailable due to technical constraints. The products are generated to provide analysis and emergency response situational awareness and to facilitate decision-making during major emergency events. They are generated rapidly, with limited time available for editing and validation, and reflect the conditions at the date/time of acquisition. While efforts are made to produce high quality products, near-real time production may result in errors due to the limited time available for editing and validation. Also note that current algorithms may not be optimized to map all areas potentially affected by the associated emergency, such as regions obscured by the forest canopy or urban architecture, and therefore the product extents may not be fully comprehensive. Layers: Description: Polygons representing satellite swath imagery to be acquired throughout Canada by the Emergency Geomatics Service of Natural Resources Canada. Imagery is used to derive flood, river ice and other products for emergency response. In response to large flood events, Natural Resources Canada, for the provision of emergency geomatics services (NRCan), may be activated by Canada’s emergency management protocols. As new satellite imagery becomes available, NRCan will extract flood extent polygons and update the dataset in near real time (4 hours). This item contains the latest flood products generated in the past three days. For any data older than 72 hours, please refer to the Floods in Canada - Current Year entry. The flood products are generated and validated on a best effort basis. Various factors may affect the quality of the flood polygons. Those factors include but are not limited to: sensor type, image resolution, cloud coverage or limits to the flood polygon extraction method. In this layer, a symbology is applied to the flood polygons based on the underlying land use classification, when available, or is simply unclassified and shows the gross flood extent otherwise. Filter on dates and Area of Interest (AOI) to view specific products. Time-enabled on Date UTC field. ".zip" file packages that contain the shapefile, PDF map, and ".kmz" of individual product items are available through the FTP links listed in the Package URL field.
